Realizing Massive MIMO in LTE-Advanced and 5G

Charlie Zhang — Samsung
Elevation beamforming and Full Dimension MIMO (FD-MIMO) has been an active area of research and standardization in 3GPP LTE-A, as initial investigation showed that promising (3-5x) cell capacity and cell edge gain can be achieved with these new techniques. In an FD-MIMO system, a 2-dimensional (2D) active array is deployed to support Multi-user 3D elevation and azimuth beamforming, which results in much higher cell capacity compared to conventional systems. In this talk, we will provide a brief summary of 3GPP activities in the Massive MIMO area, including the recently completely 3D channel model, ongoing study on FD-MIMO scenarios, antenna/RF transceiver architectures, as well as potential network performance benefits.
