About the Authors

5G Cellular Communications: Journey and Destination  A Multimedia eBook is being developed by Dr. Nishith D. Tripathi and Dr. Jeffrey H. Reed.

Both Dr. Tripathi and Dr. Reed have prior experience of authoring books, conference papers, journal papers, and chapters of the books edited by others. Both Dr. Tripathi and Dr. Reed are educators. Dr. Tripathi teaches in industry at different types of companies and leads 5G research at Award Solutions. Dr. Tripathi is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Virginia Tech. Dr. Reed is a professor at Virginia Tech and leads wireless @ Virginia Tech. Together, they bring a unique combination of industry and academic experience.

Dr. Nishith D. Tripathi

Dr. Tripathi is a principal consultant at Award Solutions, Inc., a provider of technical consulting and specialized technical training for wireless communications. He specializes in a variety of technologies such as 5G, NFV, SDN, MEC, C-RAN, LAA, LTE-U, LTE-M or Cat M, NB-IoT, Prose and D2D communication, LTE-Advanced, LTE, VoLTE, IMS, HSPA+, HSDPA, HSUPA, UMTS/WCDMA, 1xEV-DO, 1x, GSM/GPRS/EDGE, and IS-95. Since receiving his doctorate in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech, Dr. Tripathi has held several strategic positions in the wireless arena. For Nortel Networks, he worked to analyze and optimize the performance of CDMA networks, in such areas as capacity, handoff and power control algorithms, supplemental channel management algorithms, and switch antenna diversity. As a Senior Systems Engineer and Product Manager for Huawei Technologies, Dr. Tripathi worked on the infrastructure design and optimization of CDMA2000, 1xEV-DO, and UMTS radio networks. He has significant experience designing Radio Resource Management algorithms for CDMA2000 and 1xEV-DO. In 2001, he co-authored two books on Cellular Communications and Radio Resource Management, and he is the author of multiple patents and numerous research papers. Dr. Tripathi joined Award Solutions in April 2004, bringing his knowledge and experience in mobile wireless technologies to plan, develop, and deliver technical training seminars. His job functions at Award Solutions put him at the forefront of emerging technologies, enabling him to author/develop new technical training material for various technologies. He teaches not only students from the industry but also mentors and certifies SMEs at Award Solutions so that they can teach and consult on new technologies. Dr. Tripathi has helped increase the industry and the FCC awareness about various technical and regulatory issues (e.g., network neutrality, spectrum screen, AT&T and T-Mobile merger, and 600 MHz auctions) by working for Reed Engineering. Dr. Tripathi has also taught network planning and optimization courses for commercial 1xEV-DO and UMTS networks. Dr. Tripathi holds B.S. (Gujarat University), M.S. (Virginia Tech), and Ph.D. (Virginia Tech) degrees in Electrical Engineering. Dr. Tripathi has been fortunate to have direct hands-on experience with a variety of commercial cellular technologies for more than twenty years.


Dr. Jeffrey H. Reed

Dr. Jeffrey H. Reed is the Willis G. Worcester Professor in the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech. He currently serves as Founding Director of Wireless @ Virginia Tech, one of the largest and most comprehensive university wireless research groups in the US. In 2010, he founded the Ted and Karyn Hume Center for National Security and Technology and served as its interim director.

Dr. Reed’s areas of expertise include software radios, smart antennas, wireless networks, and communications signal processing. He has authored, co-authored, or co-edited ten books and proceedings, contributed to six books, and authored or co-authored over three hundred journal and conference papers. His book on Software Defined Radio is considered one of the earliest and most comprehensive books on the subject. In September 2014, Dr. Tripathi’s and Dr. Reed’s book on Cellular Networks was published by Wiley and IEEE Press and is a comprehensive review of fundamentals of cellular network operations.

Dr. Reed has had numerous commercial research sponsors including Samsung, Google, Motorola, LG, TI, GM, and Intel; government sponsors including: DARPA, ONR, ARO, JIEDDO, DOJ, and Customs Dept.; and government contractors including ITT, SAIC, General Dynamics, Aerospace, IDA, and Raytheon. Dr. Reed has had been PI or co-PI on 97 different sponsored research contracts.

Dr. Reed is co-founder of Cognitive Radio Technologies (CRT), a company that is commercializing the cognitive radio technologies produced at Virginia Tech for commercial and military applications, Federated Wireless, a company that is commercializing 5G wireless systems, and Power Fingerprinting, a company that specializes in security for embedded systems, including Android platforms. He co-founded these companies with his former PhD students. He has also served as a consultant for approximately 30 organizations and more recently was engaged in consulting regarding the AT&T – T-Mobile merger and the band plan strategy for the upcoming 600 MHz auctions. He has served on the technical advisory boards for approximately six companies and as an informal advisor on national policy regarding wireless issues. Dr. Reed served on the President’s Council of Advisor in Science and Technology (PCAST) Working Group on how to transition federal spectrum for commercial economic benefits. From 2014 to 2016, Dr. Reed served as a member of CSMAC, the advisory group on spectrum issues for the US Department of Commerce.

In 2004, Dr. Reed received the Outstanding Industry Contributor Award from the SDR Forum. During 2004, he also received an award from the SDR Forum for his pioneering 2001 publication that provides a mathematical foundation to cognitive radio based on game theory. In 2005, Dr. Reed became Fellow to the IEEE for contributions to software radio and communications signal processing and for leadership in engineering education. He is a past Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society and is currently on the Editorial Board for the Proceedings of the IEEE. In 2013, he received the International Achievement Award from the Wireless Innovations Forum for the impact of his accumulated research. In 2014, Dr. Reed served as co-general chair for the IEEE Dynamic Spectrum Access Network (DySPAN) conference.
